Inter slumped to another defeat against Schalke 04 yesterday evening. A win would have been nice, but that is the risk you take when you play a match on the attack, at some point the opponent will find an open space.
Lots of talk that Leonardo got it wrong has been popping up again, but have these people forgot what Inter accomplished in the past five or six years!! The season is not over yet and all the fans and journalists should respect what this team has done with practically the same players. Scudetto 05/06, 06/07, 07/08, 08/09, 09/10 Coppa Italia 04/05, 05/06, 09/10 Italian Super Cup 05, 06, 09, 10 Champions League 09/10 and finally 2010 World Champions.
That is 14 major trophies in the past six years... and people forget this. Where was Milan or Juventus?? Ok they had their corruption problems, but I can't believe teams like that cant get their act together after two or three years.
The fact remain that Inter do need to start the re-building process, just adding a couple of new players will not really do the job.
Inter's veteran champions are just finding it hard to keep up with the younger squads and the encounters against Tottenham Hotspurs and Schalke 04 was proof of the problems in the squad.
The side must mix young and old so that the winning mentality continues, but saying this, younger players will have more desire as they will want to win some major titles.
Regarding the situation with Leonardo, I would give him a chance next season. He has injected some good vibes in the team after the nightmare of Benitez. Yes, it is true Leonardo does not have the technical abilities yet of Mourinho, Ancelloti etc..., but he is young and he will learn. If Moratti keeps giving him the support he needs, Leonardo can become a great coach. Inter brought in Benitez at the beginning of the season because of his great background and technical abilities, but look what happened, they acquired a coach crying for players like a kid crying for some ice-cream and all this after Benitez had a the European Champions at his disposal.
If Leonardo starts the next season with a fresh Inter side, he can challenge for the Scudetto from the beginning on even terms. This season Leonardo had a huge mountain to climb, and he accomplished what he had to do. He brought the team out from misery in the middle of the Serie A table, and made a decent challenge for the Scudetto. Milan are favourites for the title, but the season is not over yet. We must not forget, Inter have the Coppa Italia to play for, and winning this would be a great starting point for Leonardo, and it would be a great accomplishment after just only being the Inter coach from the beginning of the year.
Am I happy for what Inter has did this year... I can definitely say yes, as the team showed they can come together when times are tough, and that is the secret to future success!!
Forza Inter
